Official business information

Registered name: Poplarfield Advisory
Established: 2018
Registered office: Office 9, 45 Placeholder Street, Taipei 00000

How we began

Poplarfield Advisory started when co-founder James Hsu left a regional advertising agency after fifteen years working with food brands and neighbourhood retailers. He noticed smaller firms were either overcharged for full rebrands or given generic taglines that staff never used. Partner Yuki Watanabe, who had managed operations for a chain of physiotherapy clinics in northern Taiwan, joined in 2019 to bring an operator’s view to every engagement.

We chose the name Poplarfield to evoke the mixed commercial-residential streets we walk during audits—tree-lined blocks where a bakery sits beside a clinic beside a hardware shop. Our work stays on those streets rather than chasing national campaigns.

What we do

We help owner-led firms clarify who they serve, what makes them distinct in their district, and how to say that consistently across signage, websites, staff conversations, and printed materials. We do not build websites, run ads, or sell software. Our deliverables are positioning statements, messaging guides, audits, and briefs your team can implement with your existing vendors.

Our approach

  1. Field first — We read your street before we read slide decks. Signage, foot traffic, and competitor facades inform every recommendation.
  2. Owner voice — Positioning language must sound like the person customers already trust, not a copywriter’s fantasy.
  3. Small scope, clear output — Each engagement has a defined document or session outcome. No open-ended retainers unless you explicitly request ongoing advisory hours.
  4. Taiwan context — We account for mixed Traditional Chinese and English signage norms, night-market adjacency, MRT corridor competition, and district-level loyalty patterns.

The team

James Hsu — Lead consultant. Former agency strategy director. Specialises in food, retail, and personal services positioning.

Yuki Watanabe — Operations advisor. Background in multi-site clinic management. Leads messaging audits and staff-script alignment.

Lin Pei-ting — Research associate. Maintains competitor archives for Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung districts.

Community ties

We host a quarterly peer breakfast for owner-led firms in Taipei’s Zhongshan and Da’an districts—no pitches, just structured conversation on neighbourhood competition. We also guest lecture at a local SME workshop series on reading your competitive street without hiring a full agency.
